Use Smartlead Manual Step events in your CRM
OutboundSync now supports Smartlead’s Manual Step Reached sequence event. When a prospect reaches a manual step in a Smartlead campaign, such as a call, a social touch, or another task your rep does by hand, OutboundSync writes it to your CRM. From there your team can work that step in the tools they already use.
It’s live now for every OutboundSync customer. There’s nothing to upgrade. Just turn the event on in Smartlead.
What it is
Most outbound sequences aren’t email-only. A common pattern is one or two emails, and then, if the prospect doesn’t reply, a phone call or a social touch. Smartlead handles that with a manual step, and it fires a Manual Step Reached event when a lead gets there.
Until now, that moment stayed inside Smartlead. With this update, OutboundSync takes in the event and writes it to your CRM as a lead category status, Manual Step Reached, using the same properties OutboundSync already writes. You don’t need new fields or a new mapping. If you already build workflows on the lead category OutboundSync syncs, you can build on this one the same way.
How it works
- In Smartlead, add a webhook for the Manual Step Reached event and point it at OutboundSync, just like your other Smartlead webhook events.
- When a lead in a campaign reaches a manual step, Smartlead sends the event to OutboundSync.
- OutboundSync writes the activity to the matching record in your CRM and sets the lead category to Manual Step Reached.
- Your existing CRM automations can trigger on that value.
It works in HubSpot, Salesforce, Attio, Close, and Pipedrive.
What you can do with it
- Hand off to the phone. When a prospect hits the call step, create a call task for the record owner. If your dialer is connected to your CRM, the rep can call straight from the task, and the call is logged on the same record as the emails.
- Queue social touches. Route manual-step leads into a list or view for social outreach so reps work them in one batch instead of opening Smartlead.
- Keep the CRM as the source of truth. Managers can see which prospects are waiting on a human touch without logging into Smartlead, and report on how many leads reach a manual step per campaign.
- Alert the right person. Fire a Slack or email notification to the owner when a high-value account reaches a manual step, so the follow-up happens while the sequence is still warm.
- Measure what happens after email. Since the manual step is recorded on the record, you can compare outcomes for prospects who got the call or social touch with those who didn’t.

[00:00] Hey folks,
[00:01] this is Harris Kenny,
[00:01] founder of OutboundSync,
[00:02] and I’m very excited to support a new
[00:04] event type that we support.
[00:06] for Smartlead users that are running outbound
[00:08] campaigns.
[00:09] So it is the manual step
[00:12] reached
[00:13] sequence event inside of Smartlead.
[00:16] Here on the screen,
[00:17] I have
[00:18] what it looks like to set this up
[00:20] as a webhook event.
[00:21] And what you’re gonna do is you’re going
[00:22] to send that webhook event over to OutboundSync.
[00:26] Now,
[00:26] this comes up when you are running an
[00:28] email sequence in Smartlead.
[00:30] and you
[00:31] want there to be
[00:33] maybe 1 or 2 email steps,
[00:35] and let’s say they don’t reply,
[00:37] and you want to follow up with a
[00:38] phone call or social outreach or something like
[00:41] that.
[00:42] This is where the Manual Step Reached comes
[00:44] in.
[00:45] Now what we’ve decided to do here is
[00:48] we’re adding this as like a lead category
[00:51] status.
[00:53] So you can trigger,
[00:54] if you’re using this event type,
[00:56] you can trigger automations.
[00:57] using your existing workflows and the existing properties
[01:00] that we already write to.
[01:01] And here you can see that the category
[01:03] is that it was it reached
[01:06] manual step.
[01:07] That is the stage at which now you’re
[01:08] reaching.
[01:09] reaching out to this contact or this prospect.
[01:12] Cool thing about this is that you don’t
[01:13] have to update anything.
[01:14] This is
[01:15] live now for all OutboundSync customers.
[01:17] You can turn it on.
[01:18] And if you want to have this activity
[01:21] inside of HubSpot,
[01:22] inside of Salesforce,
[01:23] inside of Attio,
[01:24] Close,
[01:24] Pipedrive,
[01:25] you can
[01:28] manage those steps.
[01:30] If your dialer is connected to your CRM,
[01:33] you can manage those steps inside of the
[01:35] CRM.
[01:35] So we think this is gonna be great
[01:37] for sales teams.
[01:38] Shout out to Blanca,
[01:38] the user that requested this feature.
[01:40] thank you,
[01:40] Blanca.
[01:41] And excited to see what you do with
[01:43] it.
[01:44] So check it out.
[01:44] Let us know what you think.
[01:45] know if you have any questions.
[01:46] Thanks,
[01:47] we’ll see you in the next one.
